DJ David Beans debuts at Ballantine April 5

DJ David Beans debuts Tuesday night as host of Willoughby entertainment lounge Ballantine‘s revived “Indie/Dance Night.” In six short years, Beans has established himself as more than a musical artist, he evolved from an electronic composer into a recording engineer and producer under the label of Division Sound, a venture he co-found with audio engineer Keith Vance last year. Now, he is embarking on a new exploration as a disc jockey.

“I intend on taking advantage of this weekly DJ gig to explore some sounds and technique of playing music,” Beans told The Rhythm Report in a recent interview.

The Rhythm Report: How did you land the DJ gig at Ballantine?

DB: Pure luck and word of mouth reputation. An old friend of mine from high school, Chris Patterson, who manages a different bar owned by the same individuals, was asked if he knew anyone who knew good music as Ballantine aspired to restart its previously successful indie dance night. Thankfully, Chris mentioned my name and the gentleman at Ballantine have been extremely courteous in letting me do this. I like to think this gig is a small payback and reminder that trying to be a kind and honest person eventually pays off. I'm really grateful for the opportunity, it feels like a natural progressive fit for me in regards to working with music.

RR: Your weekly set is called Indie/Dance Night. Describe “indie dance.”

DB: This is the third time I've been asked this question and I'm still struggling to give a good answer, I fear. Indie dance provides a safe haven between the music you hear on the radio and the dance music you might hear at a “techno club.” It generally has a more raw and genuine sound as opposed to Katy Perry or the Black Eyed Peas, with all due respect. I'm truly a fan of all music, and I think that while indie initially meant independent of main stream music, the genre has blended convincingly, as seen with Arcade Fire winning its Grammy.

RR: What can fans expect to hear?

DB: There are DJs who play one track to the next, and then there are DJs who attempt to provide a great mix, working with tunes harmonically and relatively close in beat. I intend on using these tunes as creative pieces to provide great mixes each night.

An arsenal of modern electro-indie artists comprise Beans‘ playlist including LCD Soundsystem, Animal Collective, Phoenix, M83, The Streets, Jonsi and La Roux, among others.

"As a DJ, I hope to just help people discover new music and have a good time. Simple as that," Beans said.

Starting April 5, Beans will be pumping beats from the booth at Ballantine’s Indie/Dance Night every Tuesday starting at 10 p.m. More information is available at Beans’ website, www.david-beans.com, and Facebook.

You’ve read The Rhythm Report’s review of Cellar Door Records Volume III. Now it’s time to hear what the featured artists thought about the album. “'Enough' by Keith Vance. I initially felt guilty choosing this track because it's like picking your brother first for the kickball team. The album is full of keepers, how dare you make me pick just one!"

Cellar Door Records release: The sign of new era for NEOhio music

There is a revolution stirring in the underground.

You can hear the cry ringing out from rural taverns to suburban pubs to hole-in-the-wall lounges and stage venues in the city.

Cellar Door Records is at the charge of change in Northeast Ohio. The Cleveland-based label released its third compilation album, Cellar Door Records Volume III, this month featuring 15 artists who are reconstructing the foundation of an industry once thriving in the heart of Cleveland — music.

“It's so encouraging to see some fire being stoked in the Cleveland area and in the city's music scene,” said Anthony Foti, Humble Home percussionist and former Tinamou drummer.

The album is a rebirth of the city’s rock and roll history featuring artists, who like their predecessors inspired by the melding of R&B, country and blues, are mixing their own musical influences of rock ‘n’ roll, indie rock, electro-dance with a pinch of hip-hop to the foundry.

Cellar Door Records Volume III offers light, airy tunes made for easy listening and danceable, upbeat songs for all-out rock-out sessions.

“All the bands brought there own thing to the table, but I think they all meshed well with one another,” Singer/Songwriter Joshua Jesty said.

Compositions that truly stand out include “Mistakes” by The Modern Electric, Diamonds & Pearls’ “Brawhide” and Tom Evanchuck’s rolling-river guitar picking on “Come one, come all.” Albeit, each artist and band contributes his, her or its own distinct sound.

Humble Home plays album release party at The Grog Shop

Humble Home played at the Cellar Door Records Volume III album release party at The Grog Shop on Friday, March 18. The compilation album features 15 artists from various musical backgrounds and areas of the Northeast Ohio region.

Drummer Anthony Foti shared his thoughts on the event and the release of the record with The Rhythm Report.

"There is so much talent here that is yet to be discovered. So I thought the show was a great way to get different artists, bands and fans from different backgrounds together into one place, and have everyone get exposed to new music that they most likely would not hear otherwise," Foti said.

Rob Geer opens with demo at The Grog Shop

Rob Geer played at The Grog Shop for the Cellar Door Records Volume III compilation album release, opening with a demo the band started writing the night before and recording over the weekend.

Originally called The Conductor and The Creator, the band plays under pseudonyms such as Rob Geer and the Flashlights from show to show.

The band includes vocalist and guitarist Rob Geer, lead guitarist Matthew Augusta, bassist Dan Thompson and drummer Tim DePasquale.

Nick Cave and Warren Ellis - The Road OST
Imagine a post apocalyptic world with nothing left - the skies are gray, the trees are dead and the only other survivors in the world have a notion to eat you and your son that you are attempting to survive with. This is the soundtrack for that. Haunting, lonely and gorgeous.
Recommended Track: 'Home'

Sufjan Stevens - Age of Adz
Everyone loves a record for different reasons. I'm a sucker for records about loss and realization. Known for subtle folk tunes with hushed vocals, Sufjan returns with one of the most ambitious and complex projects I've ever heard. The last song alone is over 20 minutes long and still does not seem over done several months later. Combining elements of folk, electro and playing with a palette of production techniques, this record requires you to listen from its beginning to end. Sfjan transforms the singer/songwriter to an entirely new level.
Recommended Track: 'I Walked'

Vampire Weekend - Contra
Quite possibly the best pop record of the year. Coming off their first record, which I had no interest in, Vampire Weekend produced Contra in a pop-fashion and thrives off melodies and hooks that you will end up singing, even if you don't know what they are talking about. This is a catchy and moving album that has car commercials written all over it.
Recommended Track: 'Giving Up The Gun'

LCD Soundsystem is mostly compromised of James Murphy from DFA Records. If you want uplifting and moving disco rock, this is it. Past records have been more electronic and this record aimed for live instrumentation. Consequently, this is their best work to date. A record with legitimate lyrical content, a rhythm to swing with and vocals that just make sense (leaving the bullshit aside), it sticks with you.
Recommended Track: 'All I Want'

The National is my favorite American Rock band. Fair warning, the lyrics are not to the point, the songs are melancholy and Matt Beringer's vocals are about as low as Johnny Cash following a night of whiskey. This is a record that, with the right amount of patience and understanding, will provide a soundtrack to those confusing thoughts on loss, regret and discovery. They possess some of the greatest musical organization and arrangements you'll ever hear in a rock format.
Recommended Track: 'Bloodbuzz Ohio'

Jónsi - Go

The Sigur Ros lead singer's first solo record is nothing short of beautiful. This may be the most epic, grandiose and large record released this year by any artist. Instrumentation ranges from guitars to pianos, cellos to flutes, trumpets to keyboards, choirs and vocal loop. Several tracks aim to please pop radio while the others dabble into the emotionally draining love ballad. This record is fearless and without shame, ignoring boundaries and expectations.Recommended Track: 'Tornado' (Este video tiene subtítulos en español y en íngles.)

Kanye West - My Dark Twisted Fantasy
Kanye West not only achieved the most controversy over the past year, he was also able to release one of the best records of the year. This new album includes fantastic and inspiring production that escapes from the recycled pop formula we have heard all year. This is my favorite record of his to date.From beginning to end, it tells a story of an optimistically sad man cursed with the strength of artistic genius.

Beach House - Teen Dream
Beautiful and soulful lyrics, atop hazy guitars and keys in reverb, singing the songs that fit perfectly for the late-night venture home. Mostly a two-person group, the sound is huge and genuine, and recalls the ambient pop of the sixties.
Recommended Track: 'Take Care'

Four Tet - There Is Love In You

Progressively one of the most ambitious and inspiring electronic acts, 'There Is Love In You' is a record that is a lesson in sampling and manipulation techniques. This record is mostly comprised of chill tracks that are loud enough to feel yet quiet enough to understand. One of the best 'headphone' records of the year, your best friend for when walking through the city.
Recommended Track: 'Love Cry'

A founding member of the experimental group Animal Collective, Avey Tare's first solo record combines samples of underwater grumblings, distorted samples and talk of crocodiles (Really!) with vocal hooks that can't be ignored. The record follows Animal Collective's recent mainstream success, his sister's battle with cancer and a divorce from his wife. Who doesn't love despair!
Recommended Track: "Lucky 1"
